Adriatic Sea Temperatures Alarmingly High

The Adriatic Sea is unusually warm for early June, at some locations as much as three degrees Celsius warmer than the average.

The Ocean-Lab, a department of the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC), which deals with the development of mathematical models for simulation and prediction of the sea-mainland interaction, regularly publishes a 9-day forecast for sea temperatures, salinity, sea currents and sea levels, reports Jutarnji List on June 5, 2018.

The Centre has announced that the current temperature of the Adriatic Sea is as much as three degrees Celsius higher than is usual for the beginning of June.

Measurements made by Croatia’s State Weather Service (DHMZ) confirm that the temperatures of the Adriatic Sea are in line with the Ocean-Lab’s data. For example, at 8 am on 5 June, the sea temperature at Crikvenica stood at 25.6 degrees Celsius, while at Malinska on the island of Krk it was 25.9 degrees Celsius.

Sea temperatures in the southern Adriatic were somewhat lower but still higher than usual. At Split, the temperature was 23 degrees Celsius, while at Dubrovnik the temperature stood at 23.4 degrees Celsius.

The Severe Weather Europe website, which specializes in reporting on extreme weather conditions, attributes the current temperatures to similarly high temperatures recorded during April and May. According to their analysis, the extremely warm Adriatic Sea could easily create conditions which can lead to the creation of powerful storms.

According to Ocean-Lab’s forecast, the unusually high temperatures in the Adriatic Sea will continue in the following days as well.
