There are many attractive windsurfing spots along the coast of Croatia. But which are the best? We’ve selected five most famous and attractive windsurfing spots from Istria in the north to Pelješac in the south.

1.Bol, Brač Island

Thanks to its ideal wind conditions and one of the most beautiful beaches in the Adriatic (Zlatni Rat), Bol is often considered the best and most attractive windsurfing destination in Croatia. Situated on the south coast of Brač and separated by a three-mile channel from Hvar island to the south, Bol enjoys great wind and wave conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It’s a great place for both amateurs and professionals. If you’re a beginner, there are plenty of windsurfing schools where you can learn the basics of this sport. Also, make sure you come down to the beach in the morning, when the mild Levant is blowing. As the sun comes down, so does the wind shift to a stronger maestral blowing from SW, perfect for experienced surfers!

2.Viganj, Pelješac Peninsula

The small village of Viganj, located at the foot of the hill on the south coast of the Pelješac Peninsula, is a windsurfers paradise. Due to its location, western wind and maestral blow faster than usual, which makes for ideal surfing conditions. The wind blows constantly throughout the day, from 17 knots up to 40 knots in the afternoon (from 5 to 8 on the Beaufort scale). Mornings are suitable for amateurs and beginners, while the afternoon hours are reserved for professional windsurfers and kitesurfers. Here, the wind conditions are ideal for competitions, which is why the Croatia’s Open Championship and Croatian Cup in Windsurfing is held here every year, along with many other interntational championships. There are also many windsurfing and kitesurfing clubs and schools, which rent out equipment and will gladly show you the ropes.

3.Premantura, Pula

The Croatian South isn’t the only region attractive to surfers. The north of Adriatic (Istria) also boasts one of the most attractive destinations for windsurfing in Croatia – Premantura. This small tourist resort is situated on the southernmost tip of the Istrian peninsula, 10 km south of Pula. Bura (NW wind) and Jugo (SW) blow in the spring and autumn months, while the moderate maestral blows during the most of the summer. If the wind drops, the place offers great alternatives such as kayaking and stand up paddle boarding (SUP), which is perfect for absolute beginners or if you wish to take a break from surfing and explore the Istrian coastline.

4.Baška, Krk Island

Another popular destination for windsurfing in the north part of the Adriatic is Baška on the island of Krk.Located in a bay between two mountain ranges at the SE end of Krk, Baška often ‘enjoys’ a strong southerly gale (bura), perfect for true surfing professionals. Bura wind, coming from Senj, can raise waves up to 1.5 metres, which is great for surfing with shorter boards.  If you prefer lighter winds and calmer sea or are a beginner, head over to the nearby town of Punat, which is also equipped with a  wakeboard cable!

5. Jadrija, Šibenik

One of the most attractive windsurfing spots along the coast of Dalmatia is definitely Jadrija, a small seaside resort located near Šibenik (officially part of Šibenik). It is situated on a man-made peninsula at the entrance of the Sv. Ante Channel that leads to Šibenik. Among the local surfers,  Jadrija beach is also known as Mali Viganj. Strong bura or medium-strength jugo blows in fall and spring, while the summer weather and moderate maestral and tramontana create perfect surfing conditions.
Other great windsurfing destinations in Croatia that almost made it to the top 5 are: Povlja and Supetar on Brač island, Volosko (Opatija), Savudrija near Umag, Sabunike near Zadar, Ližnjan, Mošćenička Draga, Srima near Vodice, Ravni and Rabac near Labin, Biograd na Moru, Žnjan in Split and Neretva Delta (Komin).
