Šibenik CRO-ORC D-Marin Cup: Sailing Team X-cite further Cement their Victorious Streak
Total Croatia Sailing will go live this month, the new edition to the Total Croatia News family, we will be covering events on the Adriatic all summer, including bringing you the most up-to-date action from the world of competitive sailing; like this – The 3rd Regatta of the 2017 CRO-ORC Cup series which took place this weekend over the 29th & 30th April in the idyllic city of Šibenik.
The city of Šibenik, with it’s white-stone Medieval heart, played host to the the 3rd regatta of the 2017 CRO-ORC Cup Series this weekend. Seven boats competed on the waters surrounding Šibenik and Island Zlarin; a somewhat smaller participation than its predecessor, the Hvar Uškrsnja regatta with forty-one. Still, fewer boats on the race course does not mean less fire in the hearts of the crew. The sail yachts battled it out in strong Bura winds. Day one delivered crews a decent 16 knots of wind; while the second, brought the gift of a thrilling 25-28 knots. The atmosphere was electric and all involved had a terrific time.
Croatian sailors of the highest standards are brought together by the ORC series; it is helping to further develop the sport sailing scene in Croatia. Given that there are no mono-fleets readily available, the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC) provides an accurate measuring and grading system that promotes fair and competitive sailing; allowing yachts of various shapes and sizes to compete together. It is the world’s largest measurement system, used in more than 40 countries worldwide.
Organisers of the sailing event were D-marin Mandalina, and sailing club JK Val, Regional director of D-Marine, Božidar Duka, said “Co-operation with the ORC Sailing Association for D-Marin is a natural continuation of our efforts to promote sport sailing and the development of destinations where we operate by introducing new, attractive content that has value for the local community”. In total, four of the CRO-ORC Cup regattas will share D-Marin Mandalina as host and Dogus Group as the main sponsor; including the ORC Grand Finale in November.
The habitual winners in Šibenik this weekend, were local crew of X-41 yacht, X-cite. Thus far, this skilled team have taken home first place in all three regattas of the current 2017 series. X-cite’s regular helmsman for the ORC series, Tonko Rameša, was unavailable; so Teo Piasevoli, who usually functions onboard as tactician, took his place. Grand Soleil 42R yacht, Yellowpad, worked hard to secure second and Beneteau First 40.7 yacht, Mareus, took third. It will be fantastic to watch the CRO-ORC Cup 2017 continue; can team X-cite maintain their undefeated reign or will the challenge of knocking them off top spot prove too tempting for the other race crews?
A small, yet enthusiastic, celebration was had as X-cite’s next race starts today, the Kornati Cup. With over 100 participating yachts, the Kornati Cup is one of the largest regattas in Croatia. More on the Kornati Cup to follow….
